Exploring The Benefits Of Assisted Living

Hi there, my name is Patrice. Welcome to my site. I am excited to share my knowledge about assisted living communities with you all today. When my mother reached her elder years, I was unable to provide her with the level of care she needed each day. I wanted her to receive the best of care without feeling like we abandoned her. I set her up in an assisted living community and visited on a regular basis. I want to use this site to talk about all of the benefits of utilizing assisted living facilities for your parents and other loved ones.

Independent Living Facilities Or Assisted Living Facilities: Which Is Best For Your Loved One?

by Abigail Martin

If you have a loved one who has advanced in age, you may be concerned about their living arrangements. If your loved one lives alone, he or she may not be able to obtain the help that is needed in the case of a medical emergency. Still, your loved one may be able to perform some daily activities without assistance.

A senior living facility may be a great option. However, there are two common types of facilities that are often available: independent living and assisted living. Here is a bit of information about both options and how to determine the best option for your loved one.

Independent Living Facilities

Independent living facilities work best for people who don't need regular assistance. The facility provides assistance on an as-needed basis.

Many of these facilities make medical treatment, meals, and entertainment readily accessible, but they do not "force" care or assistance. Residents can interact in a safe environment without feeling like patients.

Because most independent living residents can care for themselves, an independent living facility may or may not offer special services, such as laundering clothes, cleaning rooms, or preparing meals, without an additional charge.

Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living facilities offer a higher level of assistance to residence. These facilities work well for people who can no longer complete daily activities without help. Although the residents at assisted living facilities still live as independently as possible, the facility does provide consistent support for routine activities, such as preparing meals or cleaning a living space. Unlike with independent living facilities, laundering clothes and meal preparation are often included in the basic rental fee.

Residents can still enjoy scheduled trips, entertainment, and other facility-sponsored activities.

Helping Your Loved One Decide

If you will be helping your loved one select the best living arrangements to meet his or her needs, consider the current level of independence that your loved one currently enjoys. Does he or she require help with the administration of medication, getting dressed, or cleaning a room? If your loved one completes all daily tasks on his or her own currently, an independent living facility may be the best option. However, if your loved one requires assistance for most small activities, assisted living may be more suitable.
